On occasions it is necessary to move non-mainline certified locomotives to and from engineering works or between events. In such cases locomotives have to be moved by road using a transporter.

In 2007, after more than 12 years out of the public eye, 50026 Indomitable finally left its secure site at MOD Bicester by road. The destination for the locomotive was Railway Vehicle Engineering Ltd (RVEL) which is based at the former Railway Technical Centre in Derby. During its stay at RVEL, work was undertaken to rectify minor damage sustained during a body lift back in 2004.
