During open weekend to celebrate the centenary of the former BREL Eastleigh works, locomotive 50035 Ark Royal had its nameplates and crest rededicated in memory of the crew of the third HMS Ark Royal.

This ship was a Courageous Class aircraft carrier, launched in 1937 and made famous for its role in the search to find and sink the Bismarck. The ship was finally sunk by the German U-boat U-81 in 1941 in the west Mediterranean Sea. The fifth and latest HMS Ark Royal is an Invincible Class aircraft carrier which was launched in 1978. The ceremony was undertaken by the captain from this current ship.
