2012 East Lancashire Railway Theme Day

50015 Valiant and 55022 Royal Scots Grey attended the November 2012 BR Blue theme day at the East Lancashire Railway.

With the reorganisation of British Rail (BR) in the mid-1960s, a complete break with the past was signalled by the introduction of a new corporate blue and grey livery which dominated all passenger rolling stock until the mid-1980s.

This colour, known as Rail Blue, was a dark, greyish-blue tone that hid the dirt and grime. The new BR 'double arrow' logo and TOPS number written using the Rail Alphabet typeface were all integral parts of the livery.

This blue colour was applied to all diesel and electric locomotives with the exception of the ends, which were painted yellow to improve visibility. Underframes and buffer beams were painted black.
