50049 Defiance was used on The Pompey-Vectis Explorer tour run by Vintage Trains. The locomotive was booked to work from Tyseley to Havant via Market Harborough but came to a halt whilst approaching Elstree due to a loss of coolant. Having lost its pathing route, the tour was subsequently caped by Network Rail and returned to Tyseley behind 47853 Rail Express.

This incident was the first total failure experienced with a locomotive from The Class 50 Alliance Ltd in almost 10 years of mainline operation.
