50049 Defiance was used for the Airbourne Eastbourne tour run by Vintage Trains. The locomotive worked from Tyseley Warwick Road to Eastbourne via Kettering and the return, a total of 407 miles for the one-day trip. Locomotive 57601, supplied by West Coast Railways, was used as tail-gunner throughout the tour as insurance against a mainline failure. In reality it was only used for stock positioning purposes.

The tour carried people wishing to view one of the largest annual air shows in Britain. Displays included the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, the Eurofighter Typhoon and other international aircraft performing displays.
